I Grew Up Fine — Part One:
Family Censorship

One of three parts of a project titled, I Grew Up Fine, which seeks to provide a social commentary into how alternative families, especially single-parent families, are excluded from Singapore’s pro-family narrative that seeks to uplift traditional two-parent families, which is visually omnipresent in local media representations, which impacts the self-perception of children from such families.

The project takes a first step by introducing counter-narratives through to use of existing pro-family imagery that act as censors over text excerpts from real stories collected by people who grew up in single-parent families, which are presented through banners that are placed in public areas where pro-family advertisements tend to be spatially invasive in, which would lead viewers to a mobile website that unveils the true message behind the censors, followed by the full guided stories of different individuals from those families.

I Grew Up Fine — Part Two:
(Non-Parental Communications)

One of three parts of a project titled, I Grew Up Fine, which seeks to provide a social commentary into how alternative families, especially single-parent families, are excluded from Singapore’s pro-family narrative that seeks to uplift traditional two-parent families, which is visually omnipresent in local media representations, which impacts the self-perception of children from such families.

The second part of the project looks at another platform in which pro-family ideals are communicated – through unsolicited government mailers that are usually received in the mailbox. In addition, it is also a response to the government’s Made For Families plan for 2025, which has resulted in a speculative service that pushes for a more inclusive future for all family types in the year 2030, with different printed items catered to alternative families and championing for a Singapore for all families.

I Grew Up Fine — Part Three:
ourVillage

One of three parts of a project titled, I Grew Up Fine, which seeks to provide a social commentary into how alternative families, especially single-parent families, are excluded from Singapore’s pro-family narrative that seeks to uplift traditional two-parent families, which is visually omnipresent in local media representations, which impacts the self-perception of children from such families.

The token included in part two activates the final part of the project, which is a community-based website titled, ourVillage. Based on the phrase, “it takes a village to raise a child”, the website invites people to think about other individuals in their lives that have contributed to their upbringing beyond their parents. It also celebrates non-traditional caregivers and seeks to push for a more inclusive future for all families in Singapore by celebrating different villages on the website, where every house built represents a person that has had a role in raising you.

Watsons X Hello Kitty RPET Bags

As part of a collaboration between Watsons and Sanrio, I was tasked to come up with the art direction and designing of two RPET bags based on the Hello Kitty character from the Sanrio series.  While following closely to the brand guidelines of Sanrio and the limitations of colour, I created two different iterations for varying sizes, focusing on patterns and fine detail while complenting the chosen colour schemes. The bags are still on sale at Watsons stores in Singapore.

This project was executed during my internship with That Design & Marketing Agency.

Overgrown Acreage

A project that looks into the overgrown foliage of Opera Estate, a small neighbourhood tucked behind Siglap, Singapore.

Observing the excess growth of the plants’ correlation to the people who live harmoniously with them, I wanted to express this complex relationship of “letting things be” through branding an identity of the place through visuals that emphasise on blurring the lines between Nature and Man.
